Greasemokey[GM] is a Firefox extension which can change the appearances and functionalities of web pages. GM sits in the browse and make changes after a web page is loaded, therefore the changes, alteration are visible to you only. GM use java scripts code and scripts are easy to install and uninstall.
Few of my favorites script of GM change the appearance of hotmail, webshots, gmail, youtube etc. What the scripts do is to remove additional elements from the page like advertisements and other regular feature which is not useful to you and make the page more spacious and easy to load.
Another interesting scripts allow you to download such data which is not possible otherwise. Like videos from youtube and google videos.
GM is very powerful software which changes the way you browse and sometime such dependence poses difficulty when you are using other browser or PC without GM.
Requirements
1. Latest version of Firefox
2. Install Greasemonkey extension
3. Install scripts from userscripts.org which houses thousands scripts which are under public licenses and free to use
Following are few scripts which I use.
1. WordPress Linker
– This scripts adds a code in the post when you save your post while writing at WordPress. It displays various links to social networking website like digg and del.ci.ous so readers can bookmark your post or alternatively they can email the post.(Nita, you asked for this 🙂
2. Dowbload Youtube Video III
This script will “download video” and a graphic icon below video. Clicking on it will download getvideo.htm file change the extension to .flv. (You will need flash player to play .flv files)
3. Hotmail Ad remover
This will remove advertisements from the top and side bars on hotmail.com pages cleaner.
4. Webshots Ad remover
Does the same trick as above for hotmail.
5. Gmail+GoogleReader
If you are using gmail and google readers, this script will merge Google Reader feeds in Gmail.

Thanks JV, but i finally found it on the wp forums! Took me a good ONE hour! there are so many posts of digg and it took a long time to wade through them until i found what to do. I did it for the post and then discovered your comment! wish you had given a link in the test post. anyway, thanks.
I am absolutely not tech savvy and it takes me a long time to figure out things.
Nita said:
btw, I went to wordpress linker and nothing made sense to me! guess I am totally clueless about these things and need simpler stuff. Its there on the wordpress forums but as I said it took me an hour to find it. the exact code you put into each of your posts.
JV said:
Apologies for inconvenience. I assume that everybody already knows what I know 🙂
Well, it is not ‘I’ who put the code in every post , but the scripts inserts in every post.
However , one can do manually but that is cumbersome procedure, and I am sure you do not want to do that. Check the code http://jv.blogger.googlepages.com/wordpresslinker.user.txt
Answer my question in yes or no,
Do you use Firefox net broswer?
Nita said:
Yes.
JV said:
1. visit the following page…
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/748
2 you will see INSTALL NOW on large green button,
3. click on the it to install greasemonkey….
tell me if Greasemonkey is installed or not… then we will proceed to next step 🙂

JV, its very kind of you to help me with this. But what is grease monkey? I need to know. is a new version of Mozilla firefox. I have very limited space on my D drive which hosts windows (less than half mb) and therefore am worried that this may not load. While I can add new programs on other drives (I have just increased the space on my pc), whatever has to load on windows like mozilla will go automatically to D.
So I need to know something about this.
Sorry for all this trouble…and btw, why have you stopped blogging? I used to enjoy reading your blog.
Nita said:
P.s. yes I read this post about greasemonkey but didn’t understand it. that stuff about scripts and all. I won’t blame you if you give up now JV, but I am absolutely a novice where technical things are concerned and if this greasemonkey means loading scripts or whatever, I doubt whether I will do it!
JV said:
Greasemonkey is an extension/add-on to Firefox. GM will occupy very little of hard I mean hardly 100kb, 99kb to be precise. So, go ahead and install GM, it wont effect speed or anything else on your PC.
I am not giving up easily. Infact, I have always wondered about how to increase the readership of your blog. Seriously, I do not blog often because I am unable to express in writing what I think most of time (for me blogging should be at speed of thought :). But in your case, your posts are amazing and thought provoking and require to be read at larger platform. Blogging is very good medium if you know how handle the technicalities of the net. So ,wordpress linker, and other widgets are for necessary for your blog. So, please install GM without any worry. I enjoy assisting you, so do not worry about me.
Nita said:
Okay, I have installed it. I don’t see an obvious change though. what happens next?
JV said:
Exactly, there shouldnt be any obivious change except a small “monkey icon” in the left-bottom corner of Firefox browser.
(click to see the image http://jv.blogger.googlepages.com/greasemonkey.jpg)
Do you see it?
If yes, then GM is installed and enabled.
Now click the following link
http://jv.blogger.googlepages.com/wordpresslinker.user.js.
As you click the above link , you will see small greasemonkey window telling you that, this is GM script do you wish to install? click the install button , and you are done.
Finish upto this step, then we will move further.
Nita said:
I see the monkey but that link you gave is broken or something.
JV said:
It seems Google has aversion to java scripts sitting on its server.
Sorry for that.
Try this
http://userscripts.org/scripts/show/9421
You will see userscripts.org page with the description of the scripts and comments on that etc., On the right side bar you will notice a black button with INSTALL written on it. Click the button , and you will see GM window asking you wheather to install the script or not?
bachodi said:
There is better extension for 5. where the looks go better and bigger screen will appear for reading.
this one just makes you browse reader in gamil. why wouldnt you open a new tab and browse instead
JV said:
You meant better scripts or extension? There could be better one, as there are nearl 6k+ scripts alone at userscripts.org and I could have missed many good one.
bachodi said:
I am searching for it myself. I need to reinstall. I let you know which one is that..
Anyways it looks something like this :
http://bachodi.wordpress.com/2007/04/19/greasemonkey-scripts-for-gmail-reader/
One more thing. FOr gamil you dont need a script now. they have collected some of the best scripts and created a firefox extension ( add on ). WOnderful .. it is called “better gmail”. Try it sometime.
Nita said:
This script talk is now confusing me. 🙂 So should I wait for Bachodi to come back and explain?
JV said:
@Nita – Bachodi is talking about another script, so in first place you should be comfortable with installing ‘any’ script with greasemonkey, thereafter you can explore other scripts you wish.
You may continue with the previous step, if you haven’t.
Have you installed the script we have been discussing.
@Bachodi – I have checked your post, there is no link to the script. But from the image of gmail you have posted , I can come to the conclusion that we both are referring to the same script.
bachodi said:
Yes, JV
I did not post link to the script directly (I regret now.., I dint find it in my bookmarks too). I shall search for that once again. Even I need it now.
First image in my post refer to the script [5] you have posted and I was talking about second image in my post (where I was reading king rooster’s blog). If we are referring the same forgive me.
@Nita,
JV is correct. Try greasemonkey first. When you are comfortable with it come here and check again. Me and JV would have come to a conclusion then 🙂
bachodi said:
If you want better gmail experience , I suggest this. The best set of userscripts. (i think i refered it somewhere above )
http://lifehacker.com/software/gmail/lifehacker-code-better-gmail-firefox-extension-251923.php
JV said:
@Bachodi- lol…
Yes that what I was wondering, wheather you were referring to a script or an extension?
In the link you have given is of extension called “Better Gmail”. The author of the extension has compiled all the functionality of various scripts (you can read the list on that page) in one extension. So it is extension/add on to its own.
Whereas Greasemonkey once installed , becomes the mediator between the browser and user through the java scripts. One can write a java script and install through greasemonkey.
Anyway, have you tried Platypus? 🙂
bachodi said:
Yes JV , I am aware of it. It is an extension made of multiple scipts. I placed it here just to keep you busy he he.
I definetly was referring to a script (not extension ) for reader. I recall i dugg it. I did not conclude my script search. ” Aaj me aapko wo script dikhake hi chodunga ..” 😉
Nita said:
I clicked the black button which said install script but as I see it nothing has happened.
JV said:
@Bachodi – I will see you later…
@Nita – if Greasemonkey is installed , you should be greeted with installation window, where you can fianlly select to install the script into your computer. Hmmm…
You can try clicking again , there is no harm in it. Probably in first click the net or the server where the script reside has failed to repond.
Secondly, try this to check if the script is installed.
1.Right click on the greasemonkey icon which in the bottom of the browse.
2. On right-click you will see a small pop-up menu which will have some 4-5 options , find option saying ‘Mange user scripts…” and click on it.
3. Then you will see a window which lists of scripts installed.
4. Do you see any script listed? (script “Word Linker” should appear as we are installing it)
Nita said:
A very strange thing is happening. I did the installantin twice, that is totally of three times. each time the window has said that the scrip is installed but if I right click on the monkey it says no scripts installed.
JV said:
Click on the “Manage user scripts…” to see if the script is listed there.
Because greasemonkey is correct in its own. You will see the script active only on the pages on which the script works. This script will work on http://*.wordpress.com/wp-admin/post-new.php page. So you are finally there if everything is alright 🙂
JV said:
Try to write new post when the new post page is open, again right click on the greasemonkey icon, the Word Linker script should be listed on the pop-up menu itself.
Nita said:
Hey its happened. I wrote a new post and all those things came at the bottom of my post like magic.
JV, thanks. This was really very good of you.
and yes, when I right clicked, its there.
So now this means that this is automatic huh?
Cool.
JV said:
Great, kudos to you, you made it finally.
Yes it will appear in the bottom of every post, automatically.
BTW I have found another similar kind of script which adds more such links with tiny graphic button it is already on one of my post. Check it out.
Just tell me when you are ready to try that new script (bit more complicated though)…lol
Nita said:
Those are the tags which you have put on your post? well, if you ask me they are too many. I am satisfied with the ones I have at present. Something tells me that not many people are going to click even the present ones but its good to have them there…from Alexa I have found that the majority of my readers are from India, and from comments I have found tht many do not have their own blogs. Which means they are not likely to have digg or delicious accounts either I think.
But stats keep changing from week to week, so lets see what the future brings.
And thanks again JV. I really needed that addition. It makes my blog look professional and I think it will have a good long term effect.
Hope to see you posting more regularly from now on. 🙂
JV said:
Well, for me it is fun. But on serious note, one should offer options (not too many as I have done:)) to remember/bookmark your page. Not each and every post may be deserved to be bookmarked but these goodies come handy when a reader is looking to ways to bookmark the post/blog. And these are very small scripts and does not harm.
I too hope so 🙂
Nita said:
Thanks for telling me about the change in the title. I deleted the bookmarks for this particular post. I will be careful to think hard about the title before saving the post next time!
JV said:
No, you can keep on thinking creatively and feel free to change the title as many times you wish before publishing.
There is one trick with which you can change the bookmarks links even when you have change post url….
Nita said:
Well, why did you stop mid-sentence? Go on!
JV said:
aha.. I wanted to know if I am overdoing this script things 🙂
Ok, you now that the script works on a certain page that is…
http://*.wordpress.com/wp-admin/post-new.php*
Now we want to change the url of the bookmark links wit the new url of the same post. But , once you publish the post and edits the same you will see url like this…
http://*.wordpress.com/wp-admin/post.php?action=edit&post=313
So, the script will remain disable on the page because such page is not included for running the script.
Now when you right click on the greasemonkey icon and select “Mange user scripts…” you will see this window (hope the link works)
(be horrified to see my lists of scripts..:)
Okay, you will have only one script listed (if more then one instace of the “WordPress linker” is found keep one and uninstall the rest)
Now when you click on the “WordPress linker” script in the lefthand side list, in the righthand you will notice two windows , included page and excluded page (as seen in the image)
And in your window you will see only one page include which I have circled in red. You will have to tell the script to run also on the edit-post page, so click on the “Add…” button. It will open another small prompt window with the link of the opened page url.
Replace the text with following…
http://*.wordpress.com/wp-admin/post.php?action=edit&post=*
So now while editing the already published post, the script will be available .The name of the script should be displayed when you right click on the gm icon while on editing post page, so you will know that the script is active on the edit-post page.
Once you do this, I suggest you try this on a test post.
Nita said:
Okay shall get back to you in a day or two. Let me see if I can manage this.
Nita said:
I found a better way to solve this problem. 🙂 Simply copy the post into another page, put in a new title…and bingo!! See, no need to break my head trying all that other stuff.
JV said:
Oh… yeah, sometime such thing happens, if one knows something, he insists on doing the thing on that way instead finding new way. I was too technical … lol
Have a good day.
