After disappointing MI III, I went to select another movie. Then suddenly I saw Nicholas Cage on a cover. I have enjoyed a few good movie of him. So I decided to give Lord of War a try.

Story is interesting enough to hold your grasp. Young Yuri Orlov (Nicholas Cage) is a migrant from Ukraine in 80’s and settled at America. He is not interested in his small family run resturant and looking for bigger things. He realises big money in illegal trafficing of arms and starts the business. After selling his first Uzi he asks his younger brother Vitaly (Jared Leto) join him as brother, which Vitaly reluctantly agrees.

Gradually Yuri gains heights in business and starts supplying arms internationally. Then he decides to grab his dream girl , Ava Fontaine (Bridget Moynahan), ofcourse decietfully, without disclosing his real trade. Meanwhile his younger brother become cocaine addicted and goes to rehabitation center and Yuri is left alone. Your believes that every man has its price, but some dont price it, and an Interpol agent Valentine (Ethan Hawke), whose price is not money but glory, keep chasing him unsuccesfully around the globe.

In 1992 when Mikhail Gorbachev decalres end of cold war, and Ukarine becomes seprate nation and open to entry. Yuri becomes very happy, not because of the freedom gained, but knowing well that most of arms and ammunitaion of all libreated nations will be available in the market. He visits Ukarine and meets his uncle Damitri, who is Colonel of Red Army in charge of Ukarine area. He smuggles everything , from AK-47 to militry chopper. For Yuri ,AK-47 becomes the biggest export commodity and most profitable too. And African countries are biggest buyer of AK-47. He visits Liberia, to meet the dictator, in order to sell the merchandises.

Vitaly after sometime joins Yuri in African visits, where he is killed in anguish after seeing the slaughters by local people. Eventually, Yuri is caught by Valentine and is broken down.

Overall, the story has some thing new to offer. It takes a peek in the affairs of the illegal international arms dealings. However, it does not go much politically but still offers good insight the cruel fact. The movie is often narrated by the charachter Yuri and offers many witty, rather black humour.

In opening shot Yuri says “There are over 550 million firearms in worldwide circulation. That’s one firearm for every twelve people on the planet. The only question is: How do we arm the other 11? “.

During his interrogation Yuri says ” And while the biggest arms dealer in the world is your boss – the President of the United States, who ships more merchandise in a day than I do in a year – sometimes it’s embarrassing to have his fingerprints on the guns. Sometimes he needs a freelancer like me to supply forces he can’t be seen supplying. So. You call me evil, but unfortunately for you, I’m a necessary evil.”

Amensty International has offered its support to the movies for illustrating the illegal international arms dealings.
