Rang Aur Noor Ki Barat by Mohd. Rafi
Posted by JV on February 9, 2006
Album/movie : Ghazal (1964)
Title : Rang aur noor ki barat
Singer : Mohd. Rafi
Lyrics :Sahir Ludhiyanvi
Music :Madan Mohan
Mohd. Rafi is undisputedly the Golden Voice of Indian Cinema. I have been listening his songs for many years. More I listen more I am moved by his voice. It is something like honey , very smooth, simply heavnly voice.
This ghazal is from the movie Ghazal. Another thing, I listen songs, I love to listen them, but for most of part I have never seen most of the movies, or songs. Instead of I like to let my imagination run wild while listening the songs.
I have not watched this movie nor the song, but I imagine that it is from a seprated lover to his beloved who is departing with someone else.

Rang aur noor ki baarat kise pesh karun,
ye muradon ki hansi raat kise pesh karun.
Maine jazbaat nibhaye hain usulon ki jageh,
aapna aarman piro layan huin phoolon ki jageh,
tere sahere ki ye saugad kise pesh karun.
Yeah mere sher mere aakhri nazrane hain,
mein unhe aapnon mein huin jo aaj se begano mein hain,
be-taaluk si mulakat kise pesh karun.
Surkh jode ki tabo-taab mubarak ho tuje,
teri aankhon naya khwab mubarak ho tuje,
main yeah kwasish ye khayalat kise pesh karun.
Kaun kehta hai ke chahat pe sabhi ka haq hai,
tu jise chahe tera pyar usi ka haq hai,
mujse kah de mein tera haath kise pesh karun.

****
बे-तालुक/Be-taaluk= which is not attached or conntected anyway;
सुर्ख/Surkh=Red;
ताब/Taab=Luminance, Luster

The shayar concludes the ghazal very touchingly. The pain of the separated is very moving, at the heigt of his helplessness, he hoplessely declares…
Kaun kehta hai ke chahat pe sabhi ka haq hai,
tu jise chahe tera pyar usi ka haq hai.
….and then he surrenders completely, totally…
Mujse kah de mein tera haath kise pesh karun,
ye muradon ki hansi raat kise pesh karun.
Listen(Audio/mp3)….
Video…..
Note (22/03/06) – This song is not ghazal as it is believed to be. I too have wrongly described as ghazal.

Miyaan, This is a Nazm not a Ghazal. I grew up on this song and it counts undoubtedly as Rafi’s gems.
Sahir, the rebel poet of the bygone era more or less pours out his rather unsuccessful life in this Nazm. I was fortunate to learn a but about his life from our old neighbor this summer on my India visit. He was Sahir’s college mate back in Lahore days and gave some very reflective feedback.
Sahir indeed was one of his kind and the same shows in his Nazms and Ghazals, both flimi and non-filmi.
I like to say when you read Kaifi Azmi saaha, you let out a “waah”, and when you read Sahir, you let out an “Aah”.

JV, I totally agree with your sentiments on this. I have been listening to it for a long time. Unfortunaely I have never been able to find a clean copy of the song or for that matter the movie “Ghazal”. And yes the lyrics do give me goosebumps, but listening to Rafi sahab….. sing it, i feel for those precious few moments that i am in a different world far from suffering and pain..only passion and meaning…
For me it rates way up there with Rafi Sahab’s other singing. Another one that comes to mind is “Abhi na Jao Chore Kar…” from Hum Dono. And another one of my top Rafi 50 favorites is a ballad ” Aap Yunhi Agar Humse Milte Rahe…” from Ek Musafir Ek Hasina…the list is long.. I love old cinema. Thanks for triggering this nostalgia. Regards.

HI ALL,
IT’S WONDERFUL SONG OR NAZM … IT’S NOT A GAZAL OKKK…
ALL OF U LISTEN IT
FAIZAN said
it is a ghazal becouse GAZAL is an arebic word which means ‘talking with female or talking about love’
JV said
Thanks Faizan for input. However, because the present poem does not follow the rules, and therefore speaking technically and strictly it is not ghazal. In the substance , it is beautiful, and upto the mark to be considered as ghazal.
Thanks again.
